I whirled around to see where the voice came from. There, in the darkest corner of the pit, was a thin, shriveled girl. She once, before she was thrown in the pit, was pretty... but now she had a hard, worn face. Her long brown hair was matted and tangled. She wore jeans and a sweat shirt. The pants were ripped repeatedly at the knee’s.
“You new here? Hello?” She asked again. I found my voice.
“Yeah... Where exactly is... here?:
“The pit. This is where they throw the worst prisoners. What did you do?”
“Ha, I did the horrible crime of believing in God.”
“Really,” she said it slowly, half impressed, half disgusted. “well, you know what I did?” I didn’t like the way she said that. Then I realized, what could she really have done?
“What?” I said cautiously.
“Stole some food. My baby brother was starving. I had no choice! He had a fever. Unfortunately, I was caught before I could bring it back to him. I don’t know what happened to him...” Her voice seemed to crack. She quickly caught herself. “Here. It isn’t easy getting used to life inside the pits. Let me show you around.” I detected a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
“Nice place.” I said.
“Eh, needs some tapestries...” She retorted.
“How do you know how to speak English so well?” I asked, just realizing how fluently she did speak it.
“Parents taught me, before they died that is. They got in a crash, they weren’t even driving! Some drunk.” I didn’t want to continue that particular conversation.
“How are we going to get out of here?” I asked. I don’t know, I just guess I was assuming that we were going to make some heroic escape like in the movies. But... my partner in crime obviously didn’t watch those movies. She burst out laughing, worse than the Englishman in the hallway.
“Get out? Why you are one stupid American boy. There is no escape... I think you have a prison in America... Alcatraz, think of that times ten.”
“Wha-what?” I stammered. The girl chuckled cruelly.
“Yeah. Of course. What did you think? That we were just some little naive country out there in the middle of nowhere. Not knowing a single thing about anything? Is that it?
“No, no of course not. I never said that.” This girl did NOT look like someone who I wanted to make an enemy. “I just assumed that... that, well, there would be a way out. Like in the movies.”
“Of course, silly American. Always thinking about fantasy. Never reality. HA! You know how long I’ve been in this dump? Guess!”
“Uh...”
“Ten years! Ten years of my life wasted, not being even able to see my baby’s brothers first birthday! Not being able to celebrate any holidays, no, I’ve been sitting right here with NO-ONE EVER CARING!”
“Oh, I-I’m really sorry...” I felt so stupid. Of course, why did I have to be so callous! Oh no, now she was crying! “Oh, I’m really sorry..”
“No, it isn’t you! Just leave me alone. I-I... Oh no. Get away from me! GET AWAY!” She pushed me across the room. I was so surprised at her strength that I flew across the pit. The I realized why she had pushed me, a guard had entered the room, with a gun.
