“When you give to the poor, do not let your right hand know what your left is doing.” (Matt. 6: 3)
God is saying do not be proud. For example. If you give to the poor and then, say, “I have given more money to this poor family than anyone else has.” That doesn’t mean anything to God.
Or if he says, “Ha! Now everyone will like me because of the righteous thing I have just done.” That doesn’t mean anything, because he didn’t mean it to help this family, he meant it just to get all the praise.
God only rewards them who doesn’t spread the good things they have done.
For example, someone helps the poor without them knowing it. That is true love towards that poor family.
I once read in a story about this miser. He hoarded all his money, and never gave a penny to the poor. At least that’s what everyone else thought.
This man was a brilliant painter, and got lots of money for his paintings. But he was still living in a little shack, ragged clothes, and the people were wondering where all his money for the paintings went.
Two men in this town, I think one was a butcher, and the other I forgot. These two men seemed to be the charity of the poor town’s people. The two gave their meat and anything the poor people wanted, but not out of love.
Later on, the miser passed on, and everyone gave a celebration of it. Everyone was happy he had died. They hated him. He had never ever given a penny to the poor.
But that is when all the trouble started for the poor people.
One day, the poor people came to the butcher and asked for some meat. The butcher said, “You may have some if you pay for it.”
The poor people wondered, what had happened to their charity giver? And that’s when the butcher told. He said, “This miser you dishonoured was paying for your food and provisions. He made me swear not to tell anyone till he died. If you want your food, you must pay for it. Your miser was the secret of you getting food for free.”
That’s not what he really said, but it was something like that.
The people decided to honour him, by mourning over his death.
So that what it means not to let your left hand know what your right is doing.
Jeremiah 9:23-24 Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts, boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises loving-kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things.” Says the Lord.
