Chapter Four:
My mind was racing around viciously. I could NOT enter the hospital, startle her family by going to see her when they didn't even know who I was, and tell her everything about my life.
I felt my hand start to turn as they grasped the keys to start the engine up again. No. Returning would only make it worse.
My left hand slide to the side of the car and I opened the door. A smile was brought to my face as a rush of cool, fresh air entered, pushing out the stench of gas.
I took a few steps outside as if going in. Oops, forgot to lock it. Hehe, locking it to save it from the kind of creeps I used to be, who I still am inside.
I walked up to the hospital after locking the car and hesitated at the doors. Should I really do this? Yes, I should.
There was a desk right inside the door with a middle aged lady sitting behind it, who was obviously the receptionist. ''Hey, there. Can I help you?''
''Um...yeah. I wanna see-um-this girl who got shot today,'' I stuttered.
''Okay, when did she come in?''
''I-don't-know.''
She smiled. ''Well, sweetie, I gotta know that before I can tell you where she is and if it's possible to see her.''
''Where she is?'' I started to scratch my neck, a habit I developed when I was nervous. ''Look, I just know she got shot today and should have just got here.''
''Oh, yes. There was a girl who came in just a few minutes ago. Melissa Durlock, she's the one who got shot at the church. Poor thing, I wonder why anyone would do that?'' she said in sympathy. ''A friend of yours?''
''Um...yes, no... I don't know.''
She gave me a big, red, lipsticked smile again. ''I know, sweetie. You don't know how to answer that question. Yeah, its hard for young boys. She's your girlfriend, isn't she?''
It may be the only way to see her, I thought, but should I lie? ''Sort of,'' I replied nervously.
''Oh, well, she's being taken to room 216. But no visitors are allowed until tomorrow, she needs to rest, sweetie. You can come again tomorrow, if you want,'' now she just sounded like my mother, denying me things.
I felt that dreaded feeling of my gang again. A nurse came through the automatic doors and I quickly ran through before they shut.
''Security! Security!'' the receptionist called violently. But as soon as I was through the doors I walked normally, so that I wasn't accused of looking suspicious.
I found room 216, but instead of finding her resting on a moving bed, she was covered in doctors, pinning her in cords and blankets. I managed to find a small spot between them where I could get a glimpse of her face. She was very pretty, despite her frowns in pain. Oh, why, Danny?
To my surprise she looked over at me. To make my action I quickly gave her a wave and a smile. She smiled back. Phew, it was good to know--
''There's a visitor in room 216 where a new patient is! Call security!'' I looked over to see a blonde nurse standing in the hall looking directly at me in the room. ''Call security! A visitor in no visiting hours! Security!''
Nurses and doctors rushed beside her. I was trapped. Looking anxiously around for some way of escape, my eyes caught the window. Then I looked back, officers were coming for me. I hurried to the window and opened it. I hesitated a moment and then threw myself out on the rooftop of the hospital.
I ran to the edge and looked down, it was a long jump to the next roof, but when I saw the officers all struggling to get out the window at the same time I could do nothing but leap.
OUCH! One more to the ground.
''Get him!'' ''One at a time!'' ''Man, we have no time, just push!'' ''Push! Come on, hurry, we have to get him!'' ''Hurry and get him! He's getting away!'' All the officers screamed at each other.
I made it to the ground and ran desperately for my car. It was in view. ''Hehe, they'll never make it out, they're all too fat!'' I chuckled to myself.
I hurriedly opened the door and got in. My foot pressed down on that gas peddle like it never had before, I zoomed away faster than they could jump the first drop.
I zoomed away like a member of a gang...
