That evening, I decide that I want to eat at the
table with everyone else. Mother helps me up. I
don't need half as much help as I did the first
day.
When I come into the kitchen, I am greeted by
two certain little kids.
"Angelica!" I cry and bend down to hug her.
Bennick laughs and tries to pull Angelica away
so he, too, can hug me.
When they have gotten their share of hugs, I
stand up and lead them to the table. Bennick
goes to hit spot at the table. I sit to his left
and Angelica is put to my right.
"Where's Etara?" I ask.
"Washing up," Mother replies.
Mother carried some steaming pots to the table.
When she is done she sits down next to Bennick.
Etara comes in and sees the two empty
seats. "Are you waiting for someone else?"
"No," I reply. "One's for my father."
Etara frowns. "So, is he not coming tonight?"
"No," I say. "He died ten years ago."
"Oh, I'm so, so sorry!" Etara rushes forward.
"It's in his memory," I explain. "You can sit in
Gilan's seat."
Etara nods. She is murmuring, "I'm sorry, I'm so
sorry," to herself repeatedly.
As we begin to eat, Etara and I chat about the
rebels.
"So what do you think we should do?" Etara asks.
"Well, I'd love to go visit their headquarters,
but I know she wouldn't let me," I look
meaningfully at Mother, who nods.
"I guess all we can do is wait for something to
happen," Etara sighs.

4 DAYS LATER. MORNING.
I scream. Mother runs towards me with Angelica
in her arms. Bennick scrambles behind her.
"Get Bennick!" I yell to Etara.
She nods and scoops him up like a pillow and
follows Mother.
I grab Prudence, Joy, dig out my bow, arrows,
and manage to cram our two money jars. I throw
the jars in my strong hunting bag which I sling
over my shoulder.
Then I run as fast as I can after my mother.
I catch up to them quickly.
"What's happening?!" Mother screams over the
noise.
"We're being bombed!" I yell. "Run!"
The falling balls explode as soon as they touch
the ground.
"In here!" I give a burst of power and twist on
my side, sliding under a shed with a low
ceiling.
Mother and Etara soon join me with their
precious cargo.
