Erinn could barely breathe. What just happened? She stood up, shakily, and looked down the canyon path. She’d better get home before it comes back. She looked up to the skies, and whispered a quiet thank you, and walked down the dusty trail, musing about what she had just seen. The Almighty surely had sent their guardian to help her. Erinn winced. Her bleeding legs stung every time the wind blew dirt into the wounds. She quickened her pace; the sooner she got home, the better. Meanwhile, from above, Destrian glided silently through the dusty air, Erinn’s ‘thank you’ in her hands. Mortals didn’t know it, but when they thanked the Almighty, benevolence would appear. That was their thanks in physical form. Destrian slipped the glowing blue orb of gratefulness in her satchel and sighed. She loved her town, Angel Falls. The people’s love for each other there was so genuine. They were getting close, and Destrian was eager to see her place of guarding. Before long, the village archway crept into view. Destrian’s heart beat quickened. Erinn limped through the entryway and a young woman nearby hurried over to her. “Erinn,” The young woman said, her voice dripping with concern, “What happened to you? Come with me, I’ll take you to your grandfather and he’ll fix you up.” Destrian smiled. She knew that young woman; her name was Madeline. Destrian landed on the soft grass, and walked to the well. If she was right, Sonia and Willa would be there gossiping right about now. She peaked around the corner of the village shop and rolled her eyes. Yup, they were there alright, standing by the village well whispering and giggling. She chuckled softly and walked to the church, not before a shining object caught her attention. She bent down to take a closer look. It was a small gold ring. Someone had no doubt lost it. Destrian decided to leave it, in case that person came back. She entered the church—no one would be there this time of day—and the first thing that grabbed her full attention was an old lady, Maya, sitting on the front pew, bent over and crying. Destrian hurried over, but she might not be able to do much since to mortals Celestrians are invisible. She leaned close to hear what Maya was mumbling. “Please,” She said, “Almighty, I know it just be a small trinket, but it just means the world to me. I would be just so thankful if you could help me find my ring from my husband…” Destrian hurried outside to retrieve the little gold ring she had seen. Once she found it, she ran back into the church, and discretely slipped it into Maya’s pocket. Maya’s husband had die five months ago, and all he had been able to leave her was her marriage ring. After the ring fell into Maya’s pocket, she looked up from her prayer. The old woman hesitated, and then put her hand in her pocket. She gasped, and pulled her hand out. She gazed at the gold ring with awe. “Oh, Almighty one,” She sang out, “Thank ye ever so much!” Destrian caught the falling benevolence, and flew out the church doors. Maya was obviously too happy to notice that the doors had opened and closed by themselves. As Destrian continued to walk through the small village, She spotted Erinn, all bandaged up, and Ivor, the Mayor’s son. They were standing by the water falls. “It’s true,” Erinn was saying, “Our guardian did save me!” Ivor laughed. “Please,” He scoffed, “you just didn’t notice the gash before, and the animal just lost interest in you after his pain got the best of him. You got lucky, and that’s it.” Erinn crossed her arms. Ivor didn’t believe in Celestrians. Destrian couldn’t resist the sudden urge…she flew over, and gave Ivor a push. He yelled, and tumbled into the pool of water. The water falls poured over him as he stood, and trudged out. Erinn was doubled over, laughing…and so was Destrian. After composing herself, Erinn laughed, “Ivor, who do you suppose could have done that?” she burst into another fit of laughter. Ivor’s red face shone brighter than a shiny apple. He stomped off to his house, leaving a trail of water behind. Destrian managed to stop laughing, exhaled deeply, and continued her rounds. A familiar voice caught her attention. “Having fun Destrian?” She spun, and gasped. Her face flushed red, and her heart sank. “A-Aquila,” She stammered, “I…I was finishing my rounds.” Aquila was her mentor and trainer. He was a little strict, but not harsh. Right now, Destrian had the feeling he wasn’t happy. He had his arms crossed, and his eyebrow raised. “Did your rounds include that little fiasco?” He asked. Destrian was quiet. Aquila pulled an apple from the nearby apple tree, and hurled it towards Ivor. It hit him square in the back of the head…that didn’t make the young boy to happy. He looked around, rubbing his head, before slamming the door to his house. Destrian gawked at her teacher. A smile was tugging at his lips. Destrian unsuccessfully tried to stop her rising laughter. She and Aquila finished her rounds, and headed back home. Celestrians used the portal to come down, but used their wings to fly up. Nobody knew why…tradition, Destrian thought. “Did you collect benevolence?” Aquila asked, as the two flew through the darkening skies. Destrian pointed to the satchel clipped to her belt. “I got two,” She said. Aquila nodded, and looked straight ahead. Destrian swept a lock of her dark hair away from her face. This would be the last time she and her teacher would make rounds together like this. You see, Celestrians gather Benevolence for the world tree, Yggdrasil. When the Almighty first saved humanity, he created the world tree as a form of protection for the Protectorate. Celestrians are the caretakers, and guardians of the mortal realm. They take the benevolence to Yggdrasil so that one day she might bear fruit. You could say Yggdrasil’s fyggs are the Celestrian’s ticket home; back to the realm of the Almighty. When Yggdrasil bears fruit, the fyggs will be planted in selected regions, where other Yggdrasil trees will bloom. This will be enough to protect the mortal realm…and Celestrians will have fulfilled their purpose.
