“Come and get it! Fresh watermelon, grapes and more!”
I sliced a watermelon in half, then in chunks. I handed a piece to a man and continued shouting out tempting phrases. My blue top suffered a couple of squirts of fruit juice, as I cut, sliced and arranged fruit of all kinds.
I smiled and handed a piece of melon to a young boy, who I observed was creeping nearer and nearer to the stall, hoping for a little something. He was wearing tattered clothing, and his dark eyes were filled with sadness.
My fourteen year old body ached with pain as he thanked me and limped away. I shook my head. The world shouldn’t be filled with such suffering like this. Dropping my shoulders, I checked my watch. My shift should be done soon, and then I could meet my friends at the mall.
“Okay, Okay, go on! You’ve checked your watch half a million times in the past four hours. Scram!”
I turned around and smiled. “Thankyou!”
I grinned, giving my boss/auntie a hug.
I resisted the urge to wipe my sticky hands on my skinny jeans, but wiped it on a stained towel instead. I grabbed my black small sling over bag, and hung it on my shoulder, fixing a strand of my long waist-length brown hair that hung over my eyes.
“See you this afternoon!”
“Okay! Say hi to your mother ok?”
I smiled. “Sure! If I see her! I’m headed to the mall!”
Aunt Cathy smiled. “Here’s your late pay. Buy something nice!”
I raised my eyebrows. “Oh! Thanks! You sure?”
“Yeah!” Aunt Cathy insisted. “Have fun!”
I stuffed the money in my purse and headed off.
I noticed the young boy playing with some friends and a guilty feeling crept over me. I walked over to them and motioned for them to come over.
They looked at me a little nervous.
“Here!” I handed them a ten dollar bill. They looked at it astonished and handled it like it would disappear.
“Th…Thankyou.”
They scurried off to show their family, as I headed off to have a blast at the mall..............
