Ivy slammed the door to her room shut as hot tears fell down her cheeks. She and her mom had just had another argument. She threw herself onto her bed and wiped at her tears. She lifted her pillow to reveal a small, black box. She opened it, and inside was a locket in the shape of a heart. She opened the small pendant, and inside where two pictures; one of her father, and one of her mother.
"This never happened before dad left," Ivy thought. Her father had left her mother when Ivy was only 7 years old. Ivy only had one older brother, who, in her mother's eyes, was perfect. Ivy loved her older brother and knew that it wasn't his fault, but, she couldn't help but feel the slightest bit jealous. She had been downstairs eating lunch when her mom came in, yelling at her about how she never listens.
Ivy's mom had been really emotional ever since her dad left, which was understandable. Ivy loved her mom, but sometimes she felt unloved. She wanted to do something to make her mom realize that she felt ignored.
"This is it," Ivy thought. "I'm running away."

Ivy woke up early Friday morning. It was a bright fall morning, with bright orange leaves lighting up her front yard. Ivy watched the leaves dance with the wind. They swirled around the cul-de-sac, scraping against the pavement. The noise soothed Ivy.
Then she remembered what she was going to do. Ivy grabbed the backpack that she had packed the previous night, and slowly opened her door. She tiptoed out into the hallway, making sure not to make a sound. She climbed down the stairs, avoiding the creaky spots that would give her away.
She checked her watch: 4:23 a.m. She put on her sneakers and opened the door. She took one last breath and stepped outside.
"I'm running away!" Ivy realized. "I'm actually running away!"
