Mrs. Lady replied, “Why do you think they’d be here. I am just a odd old lady.”
While she was talking to the man, she helped the girls hide.
She whispered to the girls, “The paper is on the table in there. Guard it careful! Oh and there is a trap door hidden udner the table! It is not easy to find. And what ever you do don’t use the ladder.”
“Open up!” the voice sounded again.
Then she replied, “I’m coming! These old bones don’t move as fast as they once did.”
When she opened the door the stood Sheriff Long!
“Why Sheriff Long, what do I owe this visit to.”
“I think you know!” replied the Sheriff. “You are under suspicion of hiding runaway slaves!”
“You can search my house. you wn’t find anything.” Mrs. Lady said.
“Maybe not. But still I going to search your house!”
The search was taking place. Then the Sheriff found the secret door!
“Where does this door lead to Mrs.”
“It leads to the attic.”
“Why is it hidden?”
“Well you see sir. My son fell through through the rafters and got hurt very badly. He broke his leg, and it never set right. So it is hard to work. It brings back sads memeries.
“Muighty sorry to hear that.” Sheriff said. “It is also probably handy to hide rinaway slavwes, too!”
“Search it youy won’t find any thing.”
“We’ll see about that!”
He yanked open the door, and found the room empty! He quickly climbed the ladder. Just as Mrs. Lady had said the Sheriff found nothing.
“I guess you were right. But we are giong to keep a close eye on your place from now on!”
“What am I going to do? It will put slaves in danger if they come here!”
